Betty Ann Packler was born in Winston-Salem and moved to the Miami area after receiving her BFA in art at UNC-G. She has recently moved into Holly Springs and now is a full time artist while volunteering in the greater Raleigh community.
She taught art while evolving her personal art expression in south Florida. She showed her paintings and pastels in Florida from Naples to Ft. Lauderdale, winning recognition and awards in juried shows. She is a Signature Member of the Miami Watercolor Society. Since returning to North Carolina she won the wine merchants poster competition in the fall of 2007, was juried in to the 2007 North Carolina Watercolor Society show, and has shown in Raleigh and Cary while winning several more awards.
I have really enjoyed coming back to North Carolina. While one cannot go home again, I have surely found my place in Holly Springs at this point in my life.
My work is reflecting the change from the eternal green of the tropics to the variations of season here. With life either all around me growing and blooming, or throbbing beneath the earth in winter, many images and hues constantly vie for attention. We are so much more aware of the natural world here and the way in which we are only a part of the whole.
I use the realistic image as a point of departure and then add layers of my realism underneath to convey more than just a copy. I want the viewer to see more than the objects. The effect should be reality but more so, another world to contemplate.
I have also begun to work in silk to channel the freedom of beauty and color mix which does not happen with my watercolors since in that medium I love edges and textures. My pastels allow more spontaneous work with more sculptural modeling.
Each medium provides me with a unique way to share emotions and reactions to the world around me.
