Painting impels me to look at the world, both the natural world and the
world we have made, in a deeper, more intense way than I had done
before. This leads to a deeper appreciation of the way the landscape
sits below the horizon and the way shadows cast by sunlight bring out a
building's special features. Since my girlhood on a farm I have seen
fruits and vegetables as beautiful as well as life sustaining but now,
as I work to paint them, I see their color, form and texture more
intensely than before and have a deeper appreciation for their
wonderful variety and beauty.
I came to painting after an academic career in science and education
and have had only informal art education. I have studied under Luana
Luconi Winner at her studio in Raleigh and Chad Hughes at the Durham
Arts Council and have attended many workshops and classes of other
artists.
